Many people think about acupuncture treatment in terms of treating back pain, headaches or digestive issues, but very few of us would consider turning to an acupuncture practitioner to treat burns.
Actually, not only does acupuncture make burns heal faster, but it also prevents formation of scars.
A client of ours had a third degree burn from hot oil and was treated in the hospital. When he was released, he turned to our office for further treatment of the burn.
His concern was that the whole leg was swollen and the burn was hurting terribly.
At the time of the initial examination the burn was red with some white inclusions, and the skin had a diminished sensation and was dry.
We had 3 acupuncture sessions in two weeks and an herbal burn cream was prescribed.
After the second acupuncture session the swelling had gone down, and the redness around the burn was completely gone as well.
After the third session, the client’s skin had no inflammation, and the color of the skin looked healthier. He was satisfied with the results and decided to terminate the treatment because of his busy schedule.
Next time we saw him was 7 months later. The skin at the site of the burn was pink, and barely any scars were visible. A month after that even the smallest scars were gone almost completely.
Why does acupuncture help with burns?
According to Chinese medicine fire becomes a pathogenic factor when it burns our skin. When fire damages skin and hair on it, it gets trapped inside, producing a whole chain of physiological changes, like obstruction of circulation of lymph and blood, not allowing tissues to heal properly.
Acupuncture needles inserted at the sight of burns serve as hair and make it possible for the pathogenic fire to exit the body, thus promoting pain relief and expediting healing. Overall it does not require many treatments but the sooner you turn for help, the faster and easier it is to heal burns.
