Endometriosis is a painful, chronic disease that affects millions women worldwide.
It occurs when the endometrium (tissue that lines the uterus) is found outside the uterus, usually on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, possibly bladder and other locations. This tissue develops into growths and behaves the same way as the tissue of the uterine lining in menstrual cycle, however it has no way of leaving the body. This results in inflammation, pain, bleeding, infertility and other issues.
In Chinese medicine endometriosis is often attributed to deficiency of the kidney yang energy.
The goal of the treatment is to build up kidney yang and transform stagnation. This strengthens natural ability of the body to transform pathological endometriosis tissue. Additional strategies may involve regulating energy of the liver and invigorating blood. Anemic clients may require treatment to nourish their blood. Some may compensate anemia by accumulation of pathological liquid called phlegm. In such cases phlegm has to be eliminated from the body.
Usually the treatment course for endometriosis is three full menstrual cycle long. Weekly acupuncture sessions are administered and clients are advised to keep their basic body temperature logs and submit them right before their acupuncture sessions. Chinese herbs are prescribed once a week. Clients boil raw herbs and take them as teas during the week between acupuncture treatments.
