In our modern world we often prioritize everything except for sleep. Many of us don’t sleep enough or have poor sleeping habits. It might not be self evident that the amount and quality of sleep we get every night may affect our chances to get pregnant.
Sleep influences our well-being, body weight, stamina, stress level as well as sex hormones and sperm production, so I always advise my clients and friends, who are trying to conceive, to get at least 8 hours of good quality sleep every night. It is also essential to be in bed by 10 p.m. the latest, because according to Chinese medicine night is associated with moistening and cooling Yin energy. At night our bodies replenish Yin energy that has been burned up during the day. Therefore, catching up on sleep during the day does not have the same restorative effect as during the night. In terms of physiology, Yin energy is represented by such substances as Blood and hormones. By going to bed late we miss the opportunity to restore these substances, which are essential for a healthy conception and pregnancy.
Sometimes medical conditions such as thyroid disease, heartburn, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea impair our sleep. Regardless of the underlying cause of the poor sleep, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have a proven track record of helping women and men to reestablish healthy sleep patterns.
