Nail polish was invented in China roughly around 3000 BC. They used beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, gum Arabic and natural dyes like flower petals to get red and pink pigments. Since that time nail polish production became quite sophisticated and the ingredients are hard to pronounce: toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, camphor, chromium oxide greens, mica, aluminum powder…It is a long list. Luckily for everybody, all information is available online and, if we ever get concerned, we can read what scientists have to say about each ingredient. According to Chinese medicine a fingertip represents the head of a person. It is also the outermost aspect of our physiology, which is our immune system. The Lungs (in Chinese medicine not only the anatomical lungs but also the whole of the respiratory system) play a key role in the immune system and they are considered the outermost and most superficial organs of the body. So, before we apply nail polish, we should check its toxicity index and do some research on the ingredients.
